Operator Developed Applications

This is a collection of applications known to have been developed and deployed by our telecom operator customers.

The open nature of the Opencloud platform means that our telecom operator customers can develop applications for themselves, either using their in-house development teams or commisioning skills from 3rd parties within the developer ecosystem.

These applications range from the rather unexciting but vital network functions, such as number translation, to more interesting end-user applications and service features such as pre-paid style accounts to protect contract customers while they are roaming.

In most cases, the applications under this category have been implemented multiple times by different OpenCloud telecom operator customers.  For operators considering implementing these applications, it may be possible to arrange a reference call with one of OpenCloud’s customers that has implemented and deployed it already

Number Translation Services

Various number translation services to provide short number dialling, non-geographic number plans, free-phone and premium services.

Mobile Number Portability (MNP)

The MNP service provides a service for rerouting communications to ported GSM and IMS numbers towards the subscribers’ new network.

Call-back when Free

If the called party’s phone is engaged or can’t be reached, this application enables callers to request the network to call them back when the called party becomes available.

SIP Trunking

Enables T1 and Primary Rate ISDN connections to be replaced with IP-based SIP Trunk connections.

Voice Mail Divert When Roaming

Call forwarding to Voice Mail when roaming. This application avoids the inter-network connection costs: These cost-savings may be shared between the network operator and the called roaming subscriber.

Prepaid Roamers

Contract subscribers become prepaid subscribers when they roam.

USSD Gateway

A gateway providing request/response over USSD from/to the handset of subscriber data

SOAP Gateway

Call control and network equipment access to and from external HTTP based systems

Home Network Routing

Home Routing ensures that all SMS messages sent to their subscribers pass through the subscribers’ home network before being delivered so that additional security can be provided and the subscribers’ service provider has the chance to add-value by checking for spam, fraud and performing audit logging.

Mass SIP Ringing

Provides the ability to initiate a large number of calls synchronised to within a few tenths of a second.

Call Request

Gives credit starved subscribers an opportunity to make important calls, children can call parents; friends can keep talking; etc. Also helps pre-paid roamers save call costs – only paying for terminating portion of calls. Sometimes called: Pay4Me, Call me back

Call Completion

This application helps both calling and called parties get connected. The caller has personal control over how unconnected calls are handled.

Call Identity Control

This application enables subscribers to protect their identity and privacy – helping them avoid their number being shared with 3rd parties and helping them to avoid interruption from unwanted calls. Sometimes called: Selective CLIR

Call Recorder

This application provides a simple means of capturing important points made during phone calls without needing to make notes while trying to keep up with the conversation.

Call Screening

Enables subscribers to personalise their communication services, making them more useful and helpful, and freeing themselves from the interruption of unwanted calls.

Call-centre Call-back

This service enables enterprises to provide their customers with a less frustrating calling experience by avoiding the need to subsidize “Freephone” calls while customers are queuing and by spreading peak loads over the day, enterprises can potentially reduce call-centre operating costs.

Caller Identification

This service protects subscribers from nuisance calls, and gives confidence to answer calls when the callers identity would otherwise been absent.

Click-to-call

This service is a simple way to help generate customer contact at the moment the customer has an interest – while they’re on the web-site or reading the email. Enterprise customers can enjoy increased customer contact opportunities.

Cloud-based IP-PBX

This service simplifies enterprise communications without the costs of purchasing and maintaining on-site equipment. Enables more productive internal and external communications.

Caller Ringtones

This service allows subscribers to add a personal touch to their phone service. Also called Color Ringtone/ Ring-back tone.

Credit-Limit Supervision

This application can help operators protect their subscribers from bill-shock whilst roaming and also comply with “Bill-shock” prevention legislation. This helps build loyalty which helps with customer retention and also enables opportunities for ARPU growth from subscribers previously too afraid of bill shock to use services. Sometimes also called: Roaming bill-shock prevention

Find Me

This service helps consumers and enterprise customers receive the calls that are important to them – helping them to make better use of their communication services. Sometimes called: Hunt group

Flash SMS

This application attempts to deliver SMS messages during the phase at which they are submitted to the network from the originating subscriber’s handset. This helps reduce the time taken for message delivery – enabling, for example, SMS conversations without unnatural pauses. Sometimes called: SMS first delivery attempt, SMS direct delivery

Free Phone Number

This service provides enterprises with the ability to offer improved customer services, and to facilitate calls from new potential customers.

Guide me

Helps tourists and business travellers navigate unfamiliar cities and countries more easily and with peace of mind, helping them to enjoy their travels, without the worry of getting lost or arriving late.

Home Zone

This service reduces the cost of mobile calls made within the home zone, and avoids the expense and effort of renting a land-line.

IP Centrex

IP Centrex is a real-world example of cloud-based telecom service. It enables operators to provide the “SaaS” model many business customers want. Supporting “low-friction” sales direct from the web enables operators to reduce sales-costs and support the long-tail of small businesses to maximise revenues. Using all IP communication provides a cost-saving for the enterprise customer and supports enterprise mobility.

Last Call Blocker

This service protects subscribers from repeated unsolicited calls from telemarketers or persistent unwanted callers. Sometimes called: Call anti-SPAM, Telemarketing blocker

Least Cost Routing

This application enables service providers to: - Reduce the transmission costs for calls carried and messages delivered by third parties, and - Determine which operator hosts a particular non-geographic number and to route the call accordingly.

Location Alerts

This service makes social group communication more personal, useful and enjoyable and helps parents protect children and simplifies the logistics when picking kids up. Helps enterprises manage the mobile fleet and enhance customer service

One Number

The One Number service enables subscribers with multiple phones to associate a single number with all phones so that calls can be received or made on the most convenient device. Sometimes called: Multi-SIM, Personal number, Universal Number

Prepaid Charging Front-end

A suite of voice, messaging and data control applications that authorise service access in cooperation with a real-time charging system and then meter the service usage as the prepaid balance is used. Also referred to as Online Charging Front-end, Converged pre and post-paid charging.

Outbound Call Barring

This service allows rules to be specified to restrict the range of numbers that may be called from a phone number. This might be to restrict access to premium or international calling for a business, or to enable parents to protect their children from reaching inappropriate content, calling strangers or responding to scams.

Mobile Mapper

This service helps customers see where their friends, family or colleagues are. For social groups this can enhance the intimacy, parents can relax knowing that their children are safe, and enterprises can improve mobile resource management and team-working. Sometimes called: Buddy finder, Fleet tracking

Location-Based Services platform

A wide range of location-based services have been developed that run on OpenCloud Rhino and deliver real-time location information to subscribers or other IT systems within the network operator. This enables Operators to use location to add-value to their service portfolio, either by enhancing existing services by adding location or launching entirely new location-based services. This creates service differentiation and so helps attract and retain subscribers.

Parental Control

Parents can have peace of mind that their children are able to enjoy using their mobile phones without the risks of them making (or receiving) inappropriate contact, accidentally subscribing or using premium rate services or finding themselves on offensive websites.

Preferred Roaming

This application helps the service provider to meet roaming partner commitments, by increasing the connections to roaming partner networks and to reduce roaming costs and thereby increase margins for roaming subscribers. Sometimes called: Roaming Steering or Roaming partner selection

Roaming Dialling Assist

This application helps visited operators connect their visiting roamers calls. These calls, by their very nature, are often international calls back to the roamer’s home nation and are therefore of high value. Offering visitors a higher quality (more reliable) service will encourage more roamers to select the operator as their roaming network.

Split Charge

The Split Charge application handles non-geographic numbers where the caller and the called party both pay for each call to the destination number.

Temporary Number

Enables customers to safely publish a temporary phone number through which the public can reach them – but protects their personal regular phone number. Customers have the simplicity and convenience of using their own phone to receive the calls. Sometimes called: Rented alias number

User-defined Routing

This application provides operators with a service to allow their subscribers to select their preferred long-distance or international carrier for their out-bound calls. In some countries providing this capability is mandatory, regulatory requirement. Sometimes called: Carrier Pre-selection

Virtual Call Centre

The Virtual Call Centre provides automatic call distribution (ACD) and call management functionality without the need for premises equipment. Enterprises can save themselves the cost of investing, operating and maintaining their own in-house CTI system – and benefit from a solution that scales and adapts more easily to changing requirements. Sometimes called: Automatic call distribution (ACD)

Virtual Private network (VPN)

This application enables enterprises to specify multiple telephone numbers as belonging to a single virtual private network – this can include head office and national and international satellite offices numbers and employees mobiles. Sometimes called: Closed Used Group (CUG)

Voice Messaging

This application enables subscribers to record and send a voice message for the recipient to listen to when convenient – rather than risk interrupting them. Sometimes called: Voice SMS, Voice MMS

VoIP Service Connect

This application enables subscribers to call a user of an internet VoIP service (such as Skype) from their mobile. Sometimes called: Mobile call to internet softphone

Personal Call Manager

The Personal Call Manager application provider subscribers with the ability to personalise how they want the network to handle incoming calls – protecting them from interruption at inconvenient times, helping them avoid the cost of unnecessary roaming charges and enabling them to channel important calls directly to their preferred device.

Multi-Number

This application enables a single device to have multiple telephone numbers (multiple MSISDNs). This makes it simpler for customers to separate personal call costs from business expense – with the convenience of using a single phone (rather than one phone for each account). Sometimes called: Multi-line
